Charlesland and the newer estates
Most of the carpet we clean in Greystones is upstairs. In the newer estates at Charlesland and on the south side of the town, a typical house has timber, laminate or tiles on the ground floor and carpet on the stairs, the landing and the bedrooms. That makes the stairs the hardest-working carpet in the house, because every trip from the kitchen to bed goes over it.
Bedrooms wear in a predictable way. There's a darker path from the door to the bed and the wardrobe, a paler band under the window where the sun lands, and the odd drink or make-up mark beside the bed. The path and the marks usually lift well. Sun fading doesn't, because the colour itself has gone. If a bedroom is about to become a nursery or a home office, that's a good moment to have it done, before the new furniture goes in.
Sand from South Beach, and where it ends up
The sandy beach is on the south side of the town, and on a fine weekend half of Greystones seems to walk home from it. Sand comes back on shoes, towels, buckets and car seats, and in a house with carpeted stairs it gathers on the bottom few steps and along the edge of the landing.
Sand is heavier than ordinary dust and sinks to the base of the pile, so a household vacuum that skims the surface leaves most of it behind. Before any water goes on, we give the stairs and landing a slow, thorough dry vacuum. Wet sand is hard to extract and turns gritty, so on the coast this first pass matters more than anywhere.
Between cleans, a few habits help:
- shake out towels and beach bags in the garden, not the hall
- keep a coarse mat outside the door and a softer one inside it
- vacuum the bottom three steps more often than the rest of the stairs
Playrooms, juice and felt-tips
With young children, the marks are fairly predictable. Here's what we usually find, and how it tends to go:
| Mark | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Juice and squash | Lifts well if it hasn't been scrubbed in; red and orange drinks can leave a faint tint |
| Play dough | Left to dry, broken up and vacuumed out, then the stain underneath is treated |
| Slime | Softened with a pre-treatment and lifted gradually; glitter slime takes longer |
| Felt-tip and crayon | Washable pens usually come out; permanent marker and wax crayon may only fade |
| Milk and baby food | Comes out, and the smell goes with it unless it has soaked into the underlay |
Tell us what each mark is when you send photos. A forecast from a picture isn't a promise, but it's usually close. Our carpet stain removal page goes through the stubborn ones in more detail.

Older houses near the harbour and the village
Closer to the harbour and the village there are older houses, some Victorian or Edwardian, with a wool carpet or a runner on the stairs. Wool needs a different approach: less water, a wool-safe solution and a test on a hidden spot before the full clean. It also dries more slowly than the synthetic carpet in a newer house, so plan an evening with the heating on. A runner laid over painted or varnished treads is cleaned where it lies, with the hand tool kept to the fabric so the timber at each side stays dry.
The apartments around the harbour are a different job again. They usually come with a lift, a management company and a car park with a few visitor spaces, and it's worth checking the building's rules on contractors before the day.
Stairs, landing and three bedrooms? Send a photo of each carpet and one of the stairs taken from the bottom step. We'll reply with a fixed price, usually the same day.
Planning around a busy household
With children in the house, a morning on a school day usually works best. Bedrooms and stairs are done first, air movers go on the landing, and by the time everyone is home the carpet is normally dry enough for socks. Drying typically takes a few hours, a bit longer for wool or on a damp day.
If a sofa or a child's mattress needs attention too, add a photo and we'll do it on the same visit. See upholstery cleaning for sofas and chairs, or our page on stair carpet cleaning for how we work on treads, risers and nosings.
Greystones, Delgany and Kilcoole
We cover the whole town and the area around it: Charlesland, Delgany, Kilcoole, Kilpedder and Newtownmountkennedy. North of Bray Head, see carpet cleaning in Bray. For the rest of Wicklow and beyond, our Leinster carpet cleaning page explains how we cover towns outside Dublin.
We're fully insured on every job, and the carpet work is led by Ciprian, who trained with Prochem in 2018. If rooms need emptying before they're cleaned, say ahead of a sale, our Greystones house clearance service can clear them first, and the driveway can be power washed on a separate visit.
