Terraces, bungalows and holiday houses
Skerries is a seaside town at the north end of the Fingal coast, and its homes fall into a few clear types. Around the harbour and the older streets there are terraced houses and cottages, many with steep stairs and a hall that opens almost onto the footpath. Spread out around the town are bungalows and family houses, and newer estates on the edges. And there's a good number of holiday homes and summer lets, busy from June to September and quiet the rest of the year.
Each comes with its own carpet work. Terraces mean a hall and stairs that take everything from the street. Bungalows mean carpet in nearly every room. Lets mean sand, spills and a fast turnaround. Tell us which you have when you send photos, and we'll plan the day around it.
Bungalows: carpet throughout, all on one level
Bungalows are common in and around Skerries, and many have carpet in almost every room: a long hall, the bedrooms, the sitting room, sometimes even the dining room. That's a lot of carpet, but it's straightforward to clean. There are no stairs to slow us down, and the extractor can stay in one place while the hoses reach several rooms.
A few points that are particular to bungalows:
- The hall is the priority. Every room opens off it, so it takes all the traffic in the house.
- Older owners, older carpets. Many bungalows have carpets that have been down for years, sometimes wool. They're often well worth cleaning, after a test patch. Our page on wool carpet cleaning explains why wool needs care.
- We work towards the door. Starting at the far end of the house means nobody walks over clean carpet to get out.
If someone in the house finds moving furniture difficult, tell us. We move chairs, small tables and lockers ourselves, and clean carefully around beds, wardrobes and display cabinets.
Harbour terraces: the hall and the stairs
In the older terraced houses and cottages near the harbour, the front door often opens straight into a narrow hall with the stairs rising directly ahead. Everything the street and the shore bring in lands on that short stretch of carpet and the first few steps, and because there's only one route through, the wear concentrates into a dark lane.
We give that lane the most time: a slow dry vacuum to lift the sand and grit, a pre-spray to loosen the oily soil, then a hot rinse and extraction. The stairs are cleaned by hand, step by step, from the top down. Parking on the older streets is usually on-street, so we carry the extractor in from the nearest space; there's no need to keep the road outside clear for us.
Sea swimmers, dogs and damp towels
Sea swimming is popular in Skerries, and plenty of households have someone who goes in most mornings, often with a dog that loves the strand. That brings its own pattern of marks:
| What comes in | What it does to carpet | How it cleans |
|---|---|---|
| Wet towels and swimming gear | Leaves damp, musty patches where it's dropped | Freshens well unless the underlay has stayed damp |
| Salt water | Draws moisture into the pile and holds dirt | Rinses out with hot water |
| Sand | Sinks to the base of the pile and grinds the fibres | Lifted by a slow dry vacuum before the wet clean |
| Wet, sandy dogs | Paw trails and a greasy patch where the dog lies | Lifts with pre-treatment and extraction |
A hook for towels by the back door and a mat on each side of the front door save more carpet than any cleaning product.

Summer lets and the end of the season
The holiday homes and lets around Skerries see a summer of guests, then sit quiet. Carpets in those houses usually need doing at one of two points: just before the season starts, or once the last guests have gone.
If you're cleaning between bookings in high season, the timing has to be right. Book an early start on a changeover day, and leave the windows open and the heating on if the weather's cool, so the carpets are dry well before the next arrivals. Mattresses in a let pick up marks quickly and can be cleaned on the same visit; see mattress cleaning. Rugs get a colour test first; see rug cleaning.

Rush, Lusk, Loughshinny and Balbriggan
We cover Skerries and its neighbours along the coast and inland: Rush, Lusk, Loughshinny and Balbriggan. Just up the coast, see carpet cleaning in Balbriggan; further south, carpet cleaning in Malahide. The full service for the county is set out on our Dublin carpet cleaning page, and for towns past the county line, see carpet cleaning across Leinster.
If a family home or a let needs clearing before the carpets are cleaned, our Skerries house clearance service can empty it first. Spotless is fully insured on every job, and Ciprian did his carpet-cleaning training with Prochem in 2018.
