Big estates off the M2
Ashbourne has grown into one of the bigger commuter towns in south Meath, with large estates of semis and detached houses spreading out from the old village along the N2. Most are family homes, many with a dog or a cat, and the carpets have a busy life. Typically the ground floor is tiled or timber and the carpet starts at the bottom step, covering the stairs, the landing and every bedroom. Where there's a carpeted sitting room as well, that's usually where the dog spends its evenings, and it shows.
For us, Ashbourne is a short run up the M2 from north Dublin. That makes it easier to fit in than towns further out, though visits are still booked by date rather than at a moment's notice. Send photos of each room and the stairs with your Eircode, and we'll reply with a fixed price and the dates we can offer.
Living with dogs and cats
The most common Ashbourne request we get has something to do with pets. A dog in a house with carpet upstairs leaves three kinds of mark, and they don't all clean the same way.
| What the pet leaves | How it cleans | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Hair | A slow, thorough vacuum first, then extraction | Most comes out; it weaves in deeper than people think |
| Muddy paws and the dog's lying spot | Pre-treatment, then a hot rinse | Usually lifts well, including the greasy patch where the dog sleeps |
| Fresh accidents | Treated as spots, then rinsed | Usually come out completely |
| Old urine in the underlay | Treated and rinsed, but the source is below the carpet | The odour may return on warm or humid days |
The last one is the honest limit of any carpet clean. If the problem has soaked through to the underlay, the stain may lift and the smell may fade, but there's a chance it comes back. We'll tell you from the photos before you book. Our page on pet carpet cleaning goes into more detail.
A few things make a real difference in a pet house between cleans: a towel by the back door for wet paws, vacuuming the dog's favourite spots more often than the rest of the room, and blotting accidents straight away with plain water rather than a strong household cleaner, which can set the stain.

Stairs, landings and the dog's lookout post
Plenty of Ashbourne dogs have a favourite step: halfway up, or on the landing, where they can watch the front door and the bedrooms at once. That spot ends up with a greasy, darker patch from the dog's coat, and the treads below it are covered in hair that a vacuum only half lifts.
Add children running up and down, and the stairs in a family semi take more punishment than any room in the house. The wear starts at the nosings, the rounded front edge of each step, which turn grey and flatten long before the rest of the carpet.
Here's how we handle a pet-and-children stairs:
- Hair first. A slow vacuum of every tread, with a rubber-bladed tool where the hair is matted into the pile.
- Spot treatment. The dog's patch and any accident marks get their own pre-treatment.
- Tread by tread. A small hand tool cleans each riser and nosing; the landing gets the full-size wand.
- Last job of the day. Stairs are done after the bedrooms, so nobody needs to cross them again, and an air mover dries them from the hall.
For more on treads, risers and runners, see our page on stair carpet cleaning. Worn-down nosings will look brighter and cleaner, but pile that's been worn away doesn't grow back.

Sofas and armchairs with pets
Sofas in a pet house collect hair in the seams, a greasy patch on the arm where the dog rests its head, and the occasional accident. Fabric suites can go on the same booking. We remove the hair first, read the care label, try the cleaning solution somewhere out of sight, and then work through the seats, backs and arms, lifting each cushion to get at what's underneath. See upholstery cleaning for which fabrics can be wet-cleaned and which can't.
Drying typically takes a few hours for carpet and a little longer for a sofa. Keep pets off both until they're dry to the touch. We're fully insured on every visit, and the person cleaning your carpets is fully trained in carpet cleaning, having completed the Prochem course in 2018.
Ratoath, Dunshaughlin and the villages along the N2
We cover Ashbourne and the area around it: Ratoath, Dunshaughlin, the Ward and Garristown. Further up the M3, see carpet cleaning in Navan, and for the Dublin side, our Dublin carpet cleaning page. Planning a move or a big clear-out first? Our Ashbourne house clearance team can empty attics, garages and spare rooms before the carpets are done. Every other Leinster town we travel to is listed on our carpet cleaning page for outside Dublin.
