Wool carpets in Ballsbridge period houses
Ballsbridge's big Victorian and Edwardian houses were made for wool carpet, and plenty of them still have it: in the hall, on the stairs, and in high-ceilinged reception rooms. Wool hides dirt well and responds beautifully to a proper clean, but it's less forgiving than synthetic carpet.
Three things matter with wool:
- Heat and chemistry. Wool doesn't like strongly alkaline products or very hot solution, so we use a wool-safe solution at a sensible temperature.
- Moisture. Wool holds more water than nylon. Quick passes with the wand and thorough extraction stop it getting soaked.
- The backing. Older wool carpets often have a jute backing. If it gets too wet it can shrink, or release brown tannins that wick up into the pile as it dries. Controlled moisture and good airflow prevent that.
We check the fibre on the day and test a hidden corner before starting. If the carpet came with a label from the fitter, a photo of it helps.
Stair runners, rods and brass
Runners on period stairs are usually held with rods at the back of each tread, with painted or varnished timber showing at either side. We clean the runner in place with a hand tool. Rods only come off if they're loose or the runner needs lifting, and the tool stays on the fabric so water doesn't sit on the painted margins.
The nosings, where each step turns over, take the most wear and show a runner's age first. A clean brings back colour and lifts the grit, but a nosing worn down to the backing will still look worn.

Apartments in converted houses and newer blocks
Many of the large houses on the roads around Ballsbridge were divided into apartments long ago, and there are newer purpose-built blocks too. In a converted house, the shared hall and stairs often belong to the building, so the management company or landlord may book those separately. Inside each apartment it's usually synthetic carpet in the bedrooms, sometimes a wool carpet a previous owner put down.
Tell us which floor you're on and whether there's a lift. The extractor is portable, so it comes up the stairs with us either way.
Offices, practices and consulting rooms
A lot of Ballsbridge's period buildings now hold offices, clinics and practices. Their carpets wear differently: a heavy lane from the front door to reception, castor marks under desks, and coffee by the kitchen. We clean them early in the morning or on a Saturday, so the carpet can dry before the next working day. See office carpet cleaning for how that works, and our page on office clearance in Ballsbridge if furniture has to go before a refit.
Send a photo of the label, the stairs and the hall We'll check the fibre from your photos and come back with a fixed price, usually the same day.
What a clean can and can't do for an old wool carpet
Being straight about this saves disappointment. A good clean will:
- lift the grey film and grit that dull the colour
- take out most food, drink and mud marks
- freshen a carpet that smells stale from years of use
It won't:
- replace pile that moths have eaten or that's been worn away on the stairs
- reverse fading from sun through a bay window
- remove bleach or burns, or old stains that someone has already set with a strong product
Drying big rooms with high ceilings
A large reception room with a high ceiling holds a lot of air, which helps a carpet dry once that air is moving. Still air is the problem. Air movers push it across the carpet for the first hour or so; after that, open a sash window a few inches top and bottom so the air circulates, and leave the heating on low. Wool on a thick underlay takes longer than a synthetic carpet in a modern apartment, so plan for the room to be out of use for most of the afternoon.
Heavy period furniture can mark damp wool, since tannin from old timber and rust from metal castors both bleed into wet fibres. Leave the dining table and the bookcase where they are until the room is dry, or stand their feet on foil in the meantime.
