Parking first, carpets second
In most places, a carpet clean starts with the carpet. In Dalkey, it starts with the van. The village streets are narrow, much of the parking on and around Castle Street is short-stay, and some of the lanes and terraces have no room to stop at all. None of that rules out a clean, but it means we plan the arrival before anything else.
When you send photos, tell us:
- What's outside your door. A driveway, a parking bay, a lane or a single yellow line.
- Where a van could pull in for five or ten minutes to unload.
- Whether there's a back entrance that's easier than the front.
- Any steps between the road and the door.
The extractor is portable, so it doesn't need to stay beside the van, and no hoses run along the street. Once it's in the house, the van can go wherever is allowed. An early start helps too, because the village is quieter and the carpets have the day to dry.
Cottages and terraces: small rooms, steep stairs
The terraces and cottages in and around the village tend to have small rooms, a front door opening straight into the living room or a short hall, and a steep, narrow stairs, sometimes with a tight turn at the top. A stairs like that is the hardest-working carpet in the house, because every trip up is a climb and every trip down puts weight on the front edge of the step.
Each step is cleaned by hand, front edge and riser included, from the top down. In a small house, the rooms are quick to do, and the stairs is often the main event. Our stair carpet cleaning page explains how we approach it.
Small rooms also dry quickly once a window is open, though older cottages with thick walls can feel cool. Leave the heating on for a few hours afterwards, and the job is usually dry by the afternoon.
In a two-up, two-down, there's rarely anywhere to put the furniture while we work. That's fine: we clean one room at a time, moving the lighter pieces into the room we've just finished once it's touch-dry, or into the hall, and cleaning around anything heavy.
Wool runners in the period villas
Up the hill and along the roads towards Killiney and the coast, larger Victorian and Edwardian houses often have a wool runner on a wide staircase, with painted or varnished timber showing at the sides. A good wool runner lasts for decades, but it wears in a predictable way: the front edge of each step goes first, and the parts against the riser hardly wear at all.
We clean a runner in place. Moisture is kept low so nothing soaks into the timber at the edges, the solution suits wool, and the colours are checked first, because some patterned runners have dyes that move when wet. Our wool carpet cleaning page explains why wool needs that care.
If the nosings are worn, a carpet fitter can sometimes move the runner up a few centimetres so different parts take the wear. If you're thinking about it, do it before the clean rather than after.
Send the stairs, the runner and the rooms Add a note about parking and access, and we'll come back with a fixed price, usually the same day.
Sea air, sand and the hall carpet
Dalkey is close to the water on two sides, and the walk to Coliemore Harbour, Sorrento Park or the swimming spots along the coast brings sand and salt home. It ends up in the hall and on the first few steps of the stairs, where it acts like fine sandpaper on the pile. A thorough dry vacuum takes the loose grit out before any water goes down, and a pre-treatment and hot rinse deal with the rest.
A mat inside the front door makes the biggest difference afterwards. In a cottage where the front door opens straight into the living room, it's the only barrier between the street and the carpet.
Sofas on the same visit
While the machine is in the house, a fabric sofa or armchairs can be cleaned too. Upholstery is checked for its care label and colour-tested first, and loose covers are treated according to their label. Our page on sofa cleaning in Dalkey has more.

Dalkey, Sandycove and Killiney
We cover Dalkey village and the roads around it, Coliemore Road, Sandycove, Glasthule and Glenageary. Next door, see carpet cleaning in Killiney and carpet cleaning in Dún Laoghaire. If a house needs clearing before a sale or a move, our Dalkey house clear-out page explains how it works.
A cottage with a stairs and two bedrooms costs less than a villa with a long runner and four rooms, and we price exactly what your photos show, condition included, before you book. Full insurance covers every visit. The rest of our method is on the Dublin carpet cleaning page.
