Semis built for families, still full of them
Most of Raheny was built for families between the 1950s and the 1970s: estates of semi-detached houses off the Howth Road and around the village, with some older houses on the main roads. The layout is familiar. The front door opens into a hall, the stairs rise straight up, and a landing at the top leads to three bedrooms and a bathroom. Many of these houses have been home to one family for decades, and some are now being taken on by the next generation.
In houses like these, the carpet on the stairs and landing is usually the one replaced least and walked on most. It's often a decent wool mix, fitted to last, and that's good news: well-made carpet that has gone dull usually responds well to cleaning.
A typical booking in a Raheny semi looks something like this:
- Hall, stairs and landing, the carpets that see everyone, every day
- The front room, where the dog and the family both settle in the evenings
- Two or three bedrooms, often lighter work than the stairs
- A sofa or armchair, if the dog is allowed up on it
You don't have to do the lot. The hall, stairs and landing on their own is a common job, and you can add rooms later.
After the walk in St Anne's Park
With St Anne's Park on the doorstep and Dollymount Strand not far beyond it, Raheny has a lot of dogs, and a lot of muddy paws coming back through the hall. Here's how pet-related marks usually respond:
| Problem | What cleaning usually does |
|---|---|
| Hair worked into the pile | Lifted by a thorough vacuum before the wet clean |
| Muddy paw trails | Come out well once dried mud is vacuumed and pre-treated |
| The patch where the dog lies | Freshens up, though flattened pile may stay flat |
| A recent accident | Usually removed completely |
| An old accident soaked into the underlay | Improves, but odour can return on damp days |
That last row is worth being straight about. If urine has gone through the carpet into the underlay, the source sits below the surface, and cleaning from above can't always reach it. Our pages on pet carpet cleaning and carpet stain removal go into more detail.

Stair gates, scratching and other family wear
Family homes leave their own marks on a staircase. Baby gates screwed in at the top and bottom leave a worn patch where small feet waited, and the bottom step takes a beating from school bags dropped on it every afternoon. Cats pick at the edge of a step or the carpet by a door, pulling loops out of loop-pile carpet.
Cleaning brightens the colour and lifts the soil from all of these, but it doesn't mend them. Pulled loops, frayed edges and worn-through nosings stay as they are. If a tread is close to bare, we'll say so from the photos, and you can decide whether a clean is worth it or whether it's time to talk to a carpet fitter. Our stair carpet cleaning page explains how each step is cleaned.
Get a price for the hall, stairs and landing Send a photo from the hall door, one from the top of the stairs and close-ups of any marks. We'll come back with a fixed price, usually the same day.
Keeping the dog off while it dries
Damp carpet and wet paws don't mix. Plan for the dog to be in the kitchen, the garden or out on a long walk until the carpet is dry, which typically takes a few hours depending on airflow. For once, a stair gate is handy. Cats are harder to keep out, so close the doors to the cleaned rooms where you can.
Air movers do the early drying while we pack up. After that, open a window if the day is dry, leave the heating on low and keep the doors between rooms open so air keeps moving through the house.
Clearances we've done in Raheny
We've cleared a house and an apartment in Raheny, and both jobs were filmed; the videos are on our Raheny house clearance page. If a family home is being emptied for a sale or a new owner, it makes sense to do the clearance first, because carpets in bare rooms are quicker to clean and every corner is reachable.
Sofas, armchairs and mattresses can go on the same carpet visit. Fabric is checked before any water goes near it; see upholstery cleaning.

Raheny and next door
We cover Raheny along with Kilbarrack, Edenmore, Harmonstown, Artane and Killester, and along the coast to Clontarf and Sutton; see also carpet cleaning in Clontarf. Most semis here have a driveway or space on the road, so getting the machine in is rarely a problem.
What it costs depends on how many rooms you include, whether the stairs and landing are part of it, any armchair or sofa, and how heavy the soiling is. You'll have a fixed figure on WhatsApp before you commit to anything. We carry full insurance, and our Dublin carpet cleaning page walks through the method from start to finish.
