When the office moves out of the house
Plenty of Castleknock homes have a room that's been an office for years: a box room with a desk, a converted garage, a study off the hall or a garden room at the end of a long garden. Sometimes it's a home-working set-up from the last few years. Sometimes it's the study where a parent ran a practice or a small business for decades.
When that office closes, because of a return to the office, a retirement, a sale or a death, it leaves a particular kind of clear-out behind. This page is about that, and about the garages and attics that tend to be cleared along with it. For a full house clearance in Castleknock, see our main Castleknock page.
What comes out of a home office
Home offices fill up the same way everywhere:
- Furniture: desks, office chairs, bookcases, filing cabinets and a meeting table nobody has sat at in years
- Electricals: printers, monitors, old desktops and laptops, phones, routers and boxes of cables
- Paper: files, archive boxes, catalogues, stationery and manuals for equipment long gone
- Odds and ends: a shredder, a whiteboard, trophies and framed certificates
Older studies often have the heaviest furniture in the house: a partner desk, solid bookcases or a cabinet that was built in the room and never meant to leave it. We bring the tools to take these apart, and floors and door frames are protected on the way out.
All of it can go in one visit. Metal filing cabinets are recycled, electricals go for electrical recycling, and sound office furniture is set aside for reuse where possible. For larger set-ups, our office clearance service and office clearance guide go into more detail.

Papers and data are yours to sort first
Two things need doing before we arrive, and they're jobs only you can do.
Confidential papers. If the files belong to a business or a professional practice, check how long they have to be kept and how they must be destroyed. Anything confidential should be removed, or shredded by you or a document-shredding company, before the clear-out. Anything with personal details that we come across while clearing is put aside for you, never put out with general waste.
Data on devices. Wipe or remove the hard drives from old computers, and reset phones and tablets, before they go for recycling. Once a device leaves the house, the data on it is out of your hands.

Garden rooms and converted garages
Castleknock's bigger gardens make room for garden offices, and many estate houses have a garage that was converted into a study or a playroom at some point. Both bring their own logistics:
- Garden offices are often a long carry from the van, sometimes down a side passage. Tell us the distance and whether there are steps.
- The building itself can usually be emptied in an hour or two. If you want a timber garden room taken down, the electrics must be disconnected by an electrician first. Simpler timber buildings are covered under shed clearance.
- A converted garage being turned back into storage or a bedroom just needs emptying. A garage that's still a garage is covered by our garage clear-outs.

Attics and spare rooms while we're there
Once the office is empty, most people keep going. The attic above it often holds years of archive boxes and old equipment as well as the family's own storage, and it's quicker to clear both on one visit; see attic clearance. Spare rooms and the box room follow the same logic: one set of photos, one price, one van.
If it's only a desk and a chair going, furniture removal is priced for smaller loads.
A business run from home
Some home offices were the base for a small business: stock for an online shop, samples, display stands, a print room in the garage. Clearing these is closer to a commercial job than a household one, and we price it the same way, from photos. If the business also has an office elsewhere, an office clear-out in Blanchardstown or nearby can be done on the same trip.
When the study belonged to a parent who has died, it's often the hardest room in the house to clear, because it holds their working life. We go slowly, keep anything personal aside and follow the family's lead; see bereavement house clearance. A study where the paper has taken over gets the same patience; see hoarder clearance. For a home office in one of the newer apartment blocks, apartment clearance explains lifts and parking.
Everything leaves under our waste permit, NWCPO-25-13287-01, and we're fully insured on every job. For the rest of the county, see house clearance in Dublin.
