The good room and the everyday sofa
Plenty of Castleknock houses have two living rooms, and two very different sofas. There's the suite in the front room, kept for Christmas and visitors, which hasn't been sat on much but has spent years collecting dust and quietly fading by the window. And there's the sofa in the family room or kitchen extension, which gets used for everything.
They need different things. The good-room suite usually just needs a careful freshen-up: dust and the odd mark lifted, the colour brought back. The family sofa needs real work on the arms, the seats and the headrests. We're happy to do one or both, and a short video of a Castleknock sofa job is on this page.
Timing matters with the good room. Most people want it done before a family occasion, a christening, a big birthday or Christmas, so get in touch a few weeks ahead if you can. The suite will be dry well before anyone sits on it, and the room can be shut again until the day. The everyday sofa is easier to fit in around school and work.
What the care label tells us
Before we quote, find the label. On a three-piece suite it's usually under a seat cushion or stapled beneath the frame. The code on it decides whether water-based cleaning is safe. A W means it is. WS means water or solvent, so we'll clean with care after a test. S means solvent only, and X means vacuum only; we don't wet-clean either, because water can shrink, ring or discolour those fabrics. If the label is missing, a close-up of the fabric helps us judge it.
Older suites with a traditional look, in damask, velvet or a tapestry-style weave, are the ones most likely to have a delicate fabric or no label at all. Those get extra care and a longer test.
Testing a hidden spot first
The test takes a few minutes and tells us more than any label. We choose a place you'll never see, like the inside of an arm where it meets the seat, or the back of the sofa against the wall. A little solution goes on, a white cloth is pressed onto it, and we look for colour on the cloth and any change in the fabric as it dries. If anything moves, we stop and talk it through.

Zipped covers: leave them on
Most suites have zips on the cushions, and it's natural to think they're for washing. They aren't, really. They let the foam go in at the factory. A cover that's been through the washing machine often shrinks, fades or loses its backing, and then it doesn't match the sofa or won't close over the foam. We clean covers on the cushion, so the whole suite stays one colour.
Two sofas, one visit? Send photos of both, with the care labels, on WhatsApp. You'll get one fixed price for the lot, usually the same day.
Teenagers, toddlers and the dog
The family-room sofa in a busy house picks up a bit of everything:
- Toddlers: milk, yoghurt, juice and the occasional nappy leak. These usually lift well, especially if they're fresh.
- Teenagers: fizzy drinks, takeaway grease, make-up and hair products on the headrests. Grease and hair oil respond well to pre-treatment.
- Dogs and cats: hair, paw prints, drool and the smell that comes from oils in the fabric. Hair is vacuumed off first, and the smell usually goes with the clean.
Old urine that has soaked into a cushion's foam is the hardest. We'll improve it, but the odour can come back in damp weather. Claw snags and pulled threads are damage rather than dirt, and they stay.
We clean fabric upholstery only. Leather and faux leather sofas aren't something we clean.
Drying and getting the room back
A sofa cleaned by hot-water extraction is damp, not wet. Typically it's dry in a few hours, with the cushions on their edges and air movers running. A warm room and an open window speed it up. Keep pets out of the room until it's dry, and hold off on throws and dark cushions until then, in case the colour transfers.
Castleknock and the rest of Dublin 15
We cover Castleknock village, Carpenterstown, Laurel Lodge and the roads towards the Phoenix Park, out to Blanchardstown and Clonsilla. For carpets, see carpet cleaning in Castleknock and our Dublin 15 overview. There's more on Dublin 15 upholstery on our Blanchardstown page, and a separate page for upholstery cleaning in Clonsilla.
Each piece is priced on its size, fabric and condition, and two sofas on one visit come in a single fixed quote. Mattresses can be added too (mattress cleaning). Ciprian trained with Prochem in carpet cleaning in 2018 and still works on jobs himself, and we're fully insured. For more on fabrics, see our upholstery cleaning page, and for care between cleans, the sofa care guide.
