Big sofas for big family rooms
Many of the homes in Carrickmines are newer and larger than the Dublin average, and the family room is built around one thing: a big corner sofa. Five, six or seven seats, a chaise at one end, sometimes a recliner built in, all in a pale fabric chosen to brighten an open-plan room.
A sofa like that gets used by everyone, every day. Children eat on it, teenagers sleep on it, the dog has its own corner, and the chaise end becomes the best seat in the house. The result is a sofa that looks fine from across the room and tired up close.
How we clean a corner sofa, section by section
A corner sofa is really several pieces fixed together, and we treat it that way.
- Cushions off. Seat and back cushions come off so we can vacuum the deck, the gaps between sections and the crumbs that collect in the corner.
- Label and test. We find the cleaning code and test the fabric on a hidden part of the frame.
- Pre-treat the hot spots. The chaise, the corner seat, the arms and the headrests usually need more than the rest.
- Clean each section. A hand upholstery tool rinses and extracts the fabric section by section, so the whole sofa ends up an even colour.
- Cushions up to dry. Each cushion goes on its edge, and air movers help.
Cleaning the whole sofa matters. Spot-cleaning one seat leaves a bright patch that shows up the rest.

Chaise ends, recliners and sofa beds
Chaise ends take the most wear on a corner sofa, because someone lies on them with their feet up. Expect them to need extra pre-treatment, especially at the foot end.
Recliners, manual or powered, are cleaned with the mechanism closed. On a powered recliner we unplug it first and keep the moisture well away from the motor and the cables underneath.
Sofa beds are cleaned as a sofa. If you'd like the mattress inside done too, mention it; it's a separate item, priced like a mattress.
Labels, codes and a test patch
| Letter on the label | In plain English | Our answer |
|---|---|---|
| W | Water is safe | Cleaned after a test |
| WS | Water or solvent, with care | Tested, then cleaned with less moisture |
| S | Solvent only | No water from us; we'll advise instead |
| X | Brush or vacuum only | No liquid of any kind |
Corner sofas often have the label tucked under the chaise cushion or stapled to the underside of the frame. If you can't find one, a close-up photo of the fabric is the next best thing. We test on a part nobody sees, such as the back of the frame against the wall, and check a white cloth for colour before going near the front.
We don't clean leather or faux leather, so a leather corner sofa isn't one for us.
Sofa too big to photograph in one go? Send a few photos from different angles, plus the label, on WhatsApp. We'll count the seats and sections and come back with a fixed price, usually the same day.
Children, dogs and the family-room sofa
Family sofas pick up a familiar list: juice and yoghurt on the seats, felt-tip on the arms, muddy paws along the front edge, and a grey, slightly greasy patch where the dog sleeps. Most of it improves a lot. Fresh marks lift best; old biro and permanent marker may only fade.
For pets, we vacuum loose hair off first, because hair turns into a paste when it's wet. Urine that has soaked into the seat foam is harder, and the smell can return in damp weather even after a good clean. Claw pulls and snags are damage rather than dirt, so they'll still be there afterwards.
If your sofa has zip-off covers, leave them on. Washing machines tend to shrink and fade sofa covers, so they stop matching the rest of the sofa, and some won't zip back over the foam at all.
Drying, and getting the room back
Drying typically takes a few hours, depending on the fabric and the room. Big open-plan rooms with glass doors dry quickly if you can open them. Keep the dog and the children off the cushions until they feel dry, and don't lay a dark throw on damp fabric in case the colour transfers.
Carrickmines and around
We cover Carrickmines, Foxrock, Cabinteely, Stepaside, Leopardstown and the rest of Dublin 18. The video on this page is a carpet and upholstery job in nearby Stepaside. For carpets, see carpet cleaning in Leopardstown, Stepaside or Sandyford, and for beds, mattress cleaning in Foxrock. Rugs can go on the same visit: see rug cleaning.
Every corner sofa is priced on its seats and sections, the fabric and how much work it needs, and you'll know the figure before booking. The cleaning is done by Ciprian, who completed Prochem carpet-cleaning training in 2018, and his small crew, and we're fully insured on every job. Our main upholstery cleaning page goes into fabrics in more depth, and our sofa care guide has tips for between cleans.
