Double garages and the buildings beside them
Many Carrickmines homes sit on bigger plots, and the garages match. Detached double garages, a workshop built onto the side, a store behind it, sometimes an older outbuilding that was there long before the newer houses went up. Each one fills up in its own way.
That's why we ask for photos of every building, not just the main garage. A double garage might be mostly furniture and boxes, while the workshop beside it is benches, tools and machinery. Seeing both lets us give you one fixed price for the whole job, with enough crew and van space to finish it.
| Building | What we usually find | What takes the time |
|---|---|---|
| Double garage | Furniture, boxes, bikes, sports gear, a spare fridge | Volume |
| Workshop | Benches, tools, crates, timber, machinery | Weight and dismantling |
| Outbuilding or store | Garden machinery, old furniture, decades of odds and ends | Sorting, and sometimes a longer carry |
Workshops: benches, tools and machinery
A lot of Carrickmines garages became workshops at some stage. When they're cleared, there's usually a heavy bench or two, metal racking, boxes of fixings, power tools, a compressor, offcuts of timber and sheet material, and a few machines nobody has switched on in years.
Benches and racking are taken apart on site. Tools and machinery in working order are set aside for reuse where possible, and metal goes for recycling. Garden machinery stored in the garage, such as lawnmowers and hedge trimmers, should have its fuel drained before we come, as we can't take fuel.
If you'd like to sell the better tools first, do. It's worth it for good equipment, and anything left over we'll clear.
Workshops also tend to have a shelf of things we can't take. That means tins of wood stain and varnish, white spirit, engine oil, old car batteries and the odd gas bottle from a heater or barbecue. Gas cylinders normally go back to the supplier, and some local authority recycling centres take household paints and oils, so drop those off yourself and we'll clear everything else.
Older outbuildings sometimes have a corrugated roof or wall panels made from cement sheeting, which can contain asbestos. We can still clear the contents, but we don't break up or remove those sheets. That needs a specialist contractor.

Old fridges, freezers and the drinks fridge
Garages on bigger properties often have more than one appliance: the chest freezer, the old kitchen fridge that became the drinks fridge, perhaps an American-style fridge freezer that was replaced in the kitchen and moved out here.
All of them go for specialist appliance recycling, because fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases. To get them ready:
- switch them off and empty them two days ahead, so they can defrost properly
- prop the doors slightly open to stop them smelling
- put towels down underneath, because a defrosting freezer leaks
Washing machines, tumble dryers and old TVs go for electrical recycling in the same way.

Getting a van up the drive
Long drives, gravel and electric gates are all normal around Carrickmines. None of them are a problem, but they change how we plan:
- Gates. Tell us how wide the entrance is if it's narrow, and whether the gate needs a code or a fob.
- Gravel and grass. We stay on hard surfaces where we can, and avoid parking on lawns in wet weather.
- Turning space. If there's nowhere to turn at the top of the drive, we'll reverse in so we can drive straight out.
- The tail lift. Heavy items like benches, freezers and machinery go up on the box van's tail lift, not by hand.
A photo from the road and one from the garage door back towards the gate tells us most of what we need.

Pricing several buildings at once
Every job gets a fixed price, worked out from your photos and agreed before you book. With several buildings, we price the whole lot together. What moves the figure is how many van loads there are, how heavy and awkward the contents are, how far the carry is to the van, and whether anything needs special disposal, like fridges or tyres. If you're curious where good furniture and tools end up, see what happens to things after a clearance.
Waste from your garage travels under our permit, NWCPO-25-13287-01, and the job is fully insured from start to finish. Reusable items are set aside, metals and electricals recycled, and the rest goes to licensed waste facilities.

If the attic needs doing too, see attic clearance in Carrickmines; for garden rooms, sheds and green waste, see shed clearance in Carrickmines. Our Carrickmines house clear-out page covers whole homes, and furniture removal suits a few big items on their own.
