Four neighbourhoods, one crew
Dún Laoghaire and the streets around it pack a lot of different housing into a small area. Here's what's typical in each, and what it means for a house clearance.
Dún Laoghaire town and the seafront
Victorian terraces and big period houses climbing up from the seafront, many of them split into flats; apartments around the harbour and the town centre; flats above shops on Upper and Lower George's Street. Expect stairs, shared halls and pay-and-display parking.
Sallynoggin
Built largely as local authority housing in the middle of the last century, and now a mix of owner-occupied and rented homes. Compact semis and terraces with front and back gardens, which makes loading easy.
Glenageary
Semi-detached and detached family houses, many from the 1930s onwards, with attics, garages and decent gardens, plus older houses on the Glasthule side. The roads are mostly quiet and residential, and the van can usually park on the drive.
Sandycove and Glasthule
Period houses and cottages close to the sea, with narrow roads and limited parking, especially near the Forty Foot in summer.
Flats above shops and in converted houses
Many Dún Laoghaire flats are reached through a side door and a steep, narrow stairwell, with nowhere to stage things at the bottom. We handle these by:
- taking furniture apart upstairs so it fits the stairs
- carrying down in a steady chain and loading straight onto the van
- protecting the shared hall and stairs, and keeping out of other tenants' way
- keeping the side door and footpath clear if the shop below is trading
If you're letting the flat again, our rental property checklist covers the handover. Apartment blocks with lifts and a management company are covered on our apartment clearance page.
Parking in the town and along the seafront
Most of central Dún Laoghaire is pay-and-display or permit parking, and the seafront gets busy on fine days and at weekends. To keep the van's stops short:
- tell us the nearest place to load: a side street, a lane, a drive or a loading bay
- for apartments, ask the management company where contractors should stop, because basements are too low for our Luton van
- choose a weekday morning for seafront addresses where you can
Need a house clearance in Dún Laoghaire? Send photos of each room, the attic and the garden on WhatsApp, with a note on stairs and parking. We'll reply with a fixed price, usually the same day.
When it's a family home
In Glenageary and Sallynoggin, the job is usually a family home: a parent's house being cleared for sale, or a family downsizing. We take it at your pace.
- Family first. Relatives can collect their keepsakes first, or sort alongside us while we work.
- Every drawer checked. Papers, photographs, jewellery and cash are set aside and handed to you.
- Storage spaces included. The attic, the garage and the garden shed are cleared in the same visit.
- Stages if you need them. The clearance can be split over more than one day.
See bereavement house clearance for how we support families through it. And if Mum or Dad's house had become very cluttered, we'll clear it gently and without comment; see hoarder clearance. If the house is going on the market afterwards, our guide to preparing a property for sale covers the next steps.
Flat, semi or period house: timing and scope
A one-bed flat above a shop is often a morning's work. A Sallynoggin or Glenageary semi is usually a day. A large period house in Sandycove or on the hill above the harbour can take two, especially with a basement.
Every clearance can take in the rooms, the attic, the garage and the shed, with drawers checked and floors swept or vacuumed at the end. It doesn't include a full clean, and we can't take asbestos, gas cylinders, chemicals, paint or oil. If you spot any of those, a civic amenity site or hazardous waste collection is the place for them, and we'll clear the rest.
What to have ready
- photos of every room, the attic, the garage and the shed
- a note on stairs, parking and anything very heavy
- a clear idea of what's staying, either removed or marked
- the name of whoever has the keys
The price is fixed from those photos, based on volume, access and anything needing special disposal. What we remove is sorted at the van: reusable pieces kept back where possible, metals and electricals recycled, and the remainder delivered to licensed facilities. All of it is collected under permit NWCPO-25-13287-01. See how to prepare a property for clearance or our main house clearance Dublin page.
