No side gate, no problem
Most of Ranelagh's terraced houses, from the Victorian red-bricks to the smaller artisan cottages, have no side passage. The only way from the back garden to the street is through the house: in the back door, across the kitchen, along the hall and out the front.
That doesn't stop a shed clearance. It just means the inside of your house becomes part of the job, and we plan for that from the start. When you send photos, include the shed and also the route: the back door, the kitchen floor, the hall and the front step.
Some houses have a rear lane instead, with a gate at the end of the garden. If that's yours, we'll use it. Our page on Ranelagh's lane garages covers loading from those lanes.
Protecting the route through the house
This is what customers usually worry about most, so here's exactly what happens:
- We walk the route with you first. Back door to front door, noting anything fragile on the way.
- Covers go down before the shed is opened. Kitchen, hall and any step or threshold we cross.
- Doors are held open. So nobody is juggling a load and a door handle.
- Fragile things move out of the way. Pictures on low hooks, hall tables and plants are moved aside with your say-so.
- Everything is carried. Bags, panels and furniture are lifted, never dragged or rolled.
- Covers come up last. After the final load, and we check the floors with you.
Original hall tiles, painted floorboards and pale carpets are all common in Ranelagh houses, and all of them are protected the same way.
Small sheds, small gardens
Rear gardens behind Ranelagh's terraces are usually compact, and the shed tends to sit tight in a corner. It doesn't hold as much as a suburban garden shed, but it's often packed to the roof: a lawnmower, a bike or two, flowerpots, barbecue gear, children's toys, folding chairs, pots and tools.
Less volume doesn't always mean a quicker job, because every load has to travel through the house. We bag small things in the garden and carry in batches, so the house isn't a constant stream of traffic.
Where the van stops matters more here than on most jobs. With every bag coming out the front door, a van right outside saves a lot of walking, but many Ranelagh roads have permit or pay-and-display parking and not much space. Tell us what's outside your house, and if a visitor permit or a neighbour's driveway is available for a couple of hours, the job goes faster for it. We keep the footpath clear and don't leave bags sitting outside between loads.

Taking the shed down and out through the hall
When the shed itself is past saving, it comes down in the garden, in pieces that fit through your doors. Timber panels are unscrewed or cut into narrower sections, roof felt is rolled up, window glass is lifted out whole and carried separately, and the floor comes up in boards. Metal sheds are unbolted and their sheets stacked flat.
If there's power to the shed, it must be disconnected by an electrician before we start. The base the shed stood on stays unless we've agreed otherwise. Corrugated cement sheets on an older shed or outhouse may contain asbestos, and we don't break up or remove them; a specialist contractor has to.
Want a price for a Ranelagh shed with no side access? Send a photo of the shed inside and out, plus the back door, the hall and the front step, on WhatsApp. We'll reply with a fixed price, usually the same day.
Where it goes, and what we can't take
Everything is sorted once it reaches the van. Bikes, tools and garden furniture that are still usable are set aside for reuse where we can. Metal is recycled, and old timber and the rest go to licensed facilities. We're insured for every job, and as an authorised waste carrier our permit is NWCPO-25-13287-01.
We can't take petrol, paint, weedkiller or gas cylinders. Take paint and weedkiller to a civic amenity site or a hazardous waste collection, and we'll clear the rest. A petrol mower is much easier to deal with if you run it until the tank is empty the last time you cut the grass. Barbecue gas bottles normally go back to the supplier, who will often take them in exchange.
Cost of a through-the-house job
The price is fixed from your photos and agreed up front. It reflects what's in the shed, whether it's being taken down, and the carry through the house. If you only want the shed emptied and kept, see our contents-only shed clear-out.
Once the shed is gone and the covers are up, some people take the chance to freshen up the hall or stairs carpet; see carpet cleaning in Ranelagh.
