When the home is in Athy and the family is spread out
A bereavement clearance around Athy often has a familiar shape. A parent has died in the house they lived in for most of their life, out in the countryside or on the edge of the town. The family who need to deal with it are scattered: a daughter in Dublin, a son abroad, a cousin who lives nearby and has the keys. Nobody can be in Athy every day, and nobody wants the house cleared by strangers in a hurry.
We plan for exactly that. The pace is the family's. Nothing personal is thrown out. And the work fits around the times people can travel down, whether that's by car on the motorway or on the train from Heuston. Our main bereavement house clearance page explains the approach in full; this page is about doing it well in south Kildare.
Planning around the people travelling in
Rural bereavement clearances often work best in stages. A common pattern looks like this:
| Stage | Who's there | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Photos and a first call | Whoever has the keys | We see the house and outbuildings and talk through what matters |
| Family time | The family, on a day that suits | Everyone goes through the house and marks what they want |
| The clearance | Our crew, with or without a family member | Every room and building cleared, with personal finds set aside |
| The last look | One of the family, or photos | A final walk round before the keys go back |
Each stage can be weeks apart if that's what the family needs. We agree the stages and the price at the start, so nobody feels rushed into the next step. If most of the family is overseas, our page on clearing a parent's home from a distance goes into that side of it.
Every room, and every building in the yard
A country house near Athy rarely stops at the back door. There's the shed, the garage, maybe an old dairy or a workshop, and decades of things kept because they might be useful someday. We clear all of it, building by building, and nothing in an outbuilding is assumed to be rubbish until someone has looked.
Some things we can't take, including farm chemicals, fuel, gas cylinders and anything that may contain asbestos. Please arrange for them to go elsewhere before the day. For a garage or outbuilding on its own, see garage clear-outs in Athy or shed clearance, and for clearing a farm property and yards, property clearance around Athy.

What we set aside as we go
Older homes hold a lifetime of papers and keepsakes, often in unexpected places. Before anything is bagged, we open every drawer, box, handbag and coat pocket. These are always kept for the family:
- Documents. Bank books, deeds, land and farm papers, insurance policies and wills.
- Photographs and letters, including loose ones in books and biscuit tins.
- Jewellery, watches, medals and cash.
- Anything that looks personal, even if it seems small.
Everything is gathered in one place and handed to the person the family names, at the end of each day or when they next visit. Our bereavement clearance guide has more on what executors usually need to keep.

Keys, neighbours and the empty house
In the countryside, the keys are often with a neighbour, a relative living close by or the family solicitor. We arrange collection and return with them directly, lock up after every visit, and send photos to the family each day so everyone knows how things stand.
If the house has been empty for a while, let us know whether the electricity is still connected. Light in the attic, the sheds and the back rooms makes the work safer and quicker, and if the power is off we plan the clearance for daylight hours. In winter, that can mean an earlier start or an extra day. Our office line, (059) 865 2981, shares an area code with Athy, and WhatsApp on 085 202 1222 is the quickest way to send photos.
On every visit we're fully insured, and the contents leave under our waste collection permit, NWCPO-25-13287-01. Furniture and household goods with life left in them are passed on for reuse where possible, old appliances and scrap go for recycling, and the rest is taken to licensed facilities.
When the house is empty
Once the rooms are clear, the floors are swept or vacuumed and the house is ready for whatever the family decides, whether that's a sale, a letting or keeping it in the family. If the carpets are staying, an empty house is the easiest time to clean them; see carpet cleaning in Athy.
